About Pat Hendricks Shihan

Patricia Hendricks Shihan began her aikido journey in 1974 under Stan Pranin and later trained at the Aikido Institute of Oakland with Bill Witt Shihan before traveling to Iwama to study with Mirihiro Saito sensei around 1976/77.

Earning her Shodan after just two weeks there, she remained for a year and a half training alongside Saito Sensei's early uchideshi. Hendricks Sensei began teaching herself in 1983 at the Kaijukempo dojo in San Leandro before taking it over in 1984.

In 1987, after a six-month teaching tour across Europe, she returned to Japan for two years of uchideshi training with Saito Sensei. During this time, she was awarded Godan and received the Menkyo Kaiden (total transmission) certificate for weapons.

Recognized for her expertise, she was awarded 7th Dan by Doshu Moriteru Ueshiba in 2012 and Shihan in 2014. She continues teaching at her dojo and worldwide, passing on the knowledge and tradition that she learned in Japan from her teacher Morihiro Saito.
